The challenges one might face in this situation could break anyone, but that did not stop Chris Gardner from pursuing happiness and his dream of being a good breadwinner for his son.
Things started to change for Gardner, when he had a chance encounter with a red Ferrari and asked the owner what he did for a living. After that soon, he joined internship program of stockbroker. And his situations began to change gradually.
What were the things he did to provide for his son?
First of all Gardner worked as a medical supply salesman and he changed his job to a stockbroker. But his stipend was small, so he would mow lawns and clean basements for additional income.
Could you name an individual who went through similar difficulties in life?
Mr. Son may have experienced similar difficulties in life, I think. He grow up at poor family and decided to go to the US in his high school days. He studied about computers and came back to Japan, he started his business. Finally, he expanded his company and now he has second largest asset in Japan.
When I belonged to subsidiary management group, I was ordered by the president purchasing one subsidiary’s stocks from other companies. I promised with one company’s person at certain price. Next, I agreed with other companies with same price. But the person changed his mind and refused the first price. I was upset and asked again, but he didn’t change his consideration. Through a lot of tough negotiations, I could agree with other companies with first price. After that the person who changed his mind agreed with first price again. From this experience, I studied that taking evidence is really important in the business and not give up negotiation if the situations changed and being difficult.
