April 11, 2019 was a proud day for Astronomy as the very first image of a black hole was photographed and released the public – the first direct visual evidence of a supermassive hole that was predicted by Albert Einstein more than a century ago, strongly supported by Stephen Hawking, with a theory that was previously thought impossible.
The black hole is 6.5 billion times as massive as our sun and considered unseeable to the naked eye as it is 40 billion km from the earth. So, despite the modern telescopes in the world, there is no single telescope that can take a picture of it.
The team created the algorithms using 5 petabytes (5,000,000 gigabytes) of data from 500kg of hard drives. All of these efforts were made to capture an image proving that anything is possible when we work together.
This wonderful portrait of the black hole doesn’t only remind us that nothing is impossible in the age of discovery, but it reminds us that the best things are achieved by global collaboration rather than putting restrictions along with nationalism and isolation.
What are the pros and cons of working with international teams?
Pros are that it can make in together a lot of knowledges and skills. On the other hands cons are that it is really difficult to organize and control. If you can arrange the structure to control and collaborate, the big power will be exerted.
Does your company build a collaborative environment? How? Or why not?
あなたの会社は協力する環境を構築していますか？ どうやって？ またはなぜですか？
I think my company makes a collaborative environment in comparatively. If we have a big problem, we make project team beyond a lot of departments. By doing so, we can collaborate a lot of departments ideas for solving the problem.
What are some example of the best inventions and discoveries done through global collaboration?
I don’t know specific example about it, but I think there may be a lot of example in the categories like biology, medical chemistry, physics and astronomy. But actually, because there are a lot of obstacles, it may be difficult to do it.
