In recent years, the term ‘ghosting’ has become popular. It is referred to as having someone you have strong connections with, especially romantically, just disappear without a word or a glance back.
I never really minded this trend until recently when I realized that I was a victim of ghosting myself. Not just by one, but by several people – my first long-term boyfriend and my mother.
The former just disappeared after a 9-year relationship. The latter left me under the care of a family she barely knew. I never really met her until I was in my 30s.
But when you think about it, we may have ghosted other people in the past – old friends, former colleagues, family… The funny thing is, when we’re the ghosts, we can easily justify what we did.
Hence, it’s important to have proper communication and closure. Some situations may be uncomfortable to deal with, but we have to drum up the courage to face them. This is what sets us apart from ghosts after all.
Have you or anyone you know ever been ghosted? How did you feel?
I have never been ghosted. Of course I have never been and I have never heard around me. I have watched TV program in the past which looked for ghosted people. If I were ghosted, I think I would be very surprised and confused.
I have a fear of losing an important person. It can be as sudden as death, it can be break the relationship. I think it need to communicate and trust to prevent ghosting. I think so.
Basically, I think I will share with my family and colleagues. Other than that, I think there are people who share it with group of people in similar situation. I think there are people who rely on the religion.
