Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is now the richest person in the world with an estimated 75 billion-dollar fortune. Although he is an active philanthropist, Jeff has recently made a bold move that upends the way the super-rich tend to approach giving.
while his peers tend to focus on creating positive change through long-term solutions and advancing causes they are most knowledgeable about, Jeff is thinking about talking the completely opposite approach through short-term focused “philanthropopulism.”
As otherworldly as some of the super-rich are, the fact remains that they are still a part of our society. As a result, some believe that the public should have a say as to where donations should go.
Thus, the concept of philanthropopulism was born. By combining democracy with philanthropy, Jeff hopes to be more impactful by leaving a certain amount of decision making to the people.
Shortly after his open call for ideas on June 16, 2017, Jeff Bezos received 40,000 replies and ideas on how to put his fortune to good use to make the most impact in the shortest amount of time.
By focusing on short-term targets, listening to the public, and “helping the people in the here and now”, Jeff feels that his efforts will yield significant impact in the long run as well.
I think not all wealthy people find fulfillment in philanthropy, but almost wealthy people conduct philanthropy as their feeling of gratitude for their business success and their willing of returning their wealth to the society. I think they find out their fulfilment by the philanthropies.
Do you agree that the public should have a say in where private donations are made?
Basically, I think the idea of donors should have priority. But if you want to donate effectively, it is good for you to listen the ideas of the public. Anyway, I think most important thing is that what donors want to donate to.
Do you think that focusing on short-term relief for people now is a good strategy?
I think it is a good strategy. By this article, there were only long-term solutions so far. In such situation, it is really good strategy to think about short-term relief, I think.
I think such tendencies are very interesting. If only thinking by small group of experts, it might be a biased way of thinking. I think the balance is very important between the knowledges of experts and the way of thinking by public people.
Imagine you wanted to reply to Jeff Bezos’ tweet. What would you write and why?
The answer he is looking for is the way of most impact in the shortest amount of time. In present situation, it should be the COVID-19 measures. I think we must concentrate our donation to effective COVID-19 measures now.
