If you take any world problem, any issue on the planet, the solution to that problem certainly includes education. In education, the roadblock is the laptop.
From the industrial revolution to the digital boom, technology has always been a huge economic impetus. Yet, for those developing countries whose children lack access to modern technology, the future was uncertain indeed.
Enter Nicholas Negroponte; an MIT professor, angel investor, and visionary with a passion for helping the less fortunate. Nicholas believed that if given access to affordable 21th century technology and education, impoverished children would have the means to change the world.
Nicholas launched his One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) initiative in 2005 and proposed to provide a fully functional, self-powering laptop for only $100.

Complete with a durable body, a Linux-based OS, and tools focused on developing creativity, media outlets such as the New York Times called it, “The laptop that will save the world.
Unfortunately, “The $100 laptop” (eventually close to $200) ran into numerous production, marketing, and political problems that eventually derailed Nicholas’ hopes.
Although these organizations are now mostly defunct, the now 74 year-old continues to pursue his vision of a universally connected world that provides free education and internet for everyone.
He believes that “children are our most valuable natural resource”, and continues to forge ahead with new ventures to make the world a better, more accessible place.

OLPC’s failure didn’t impact so much to Nicholas Negroponte’s self-fulfillment, I think. He is still pursuing his vision of universally connected world that provides free education and internet for everyone. Also maybe he is not satisfied about present situation, but he is trying to make come true his vision.

でも、みんなのために良いと思ったことでも、実は考えが違ったりすることはよくあります。
そんな時には、修正して、みんなが納得できるような解決策を見つけることになります。
I have never failed at something I really believed in, but I have some experience not to fit the ideas of something between stakeholders and me. I always consider good solution for stakeholders, but sometime it is different their demands. In such a case, I correct my consideration and find out another solution and finally agree with them.
Is failure even a possibility when doing something truly fulfilling?
本当に充実したことをするとき、失敗でさえ可能性だと思いますか?
チャレンジすることが大切なので、失敗することもあり得ると思います。
それも必要なことなのかもしれません。
失敗も科のせいだと考えて進めることができると成功に結び付くんだと思います。
I think for truly fulfilling, trying something is very important. So, sometimes fail about it, but it is acceptable for success. To accomplish something, we have to try and fail many times, I think.
Do you agree with his statement that “children are our most valuable natural resource”?
「子供たちは私たちの最も貴重な天然資源である」という彼の発言に同意しますか?
同意しますね。
子供たちには、無限の可能性があると思います。
でも、教育や環境が整わないと、その可能性を失わさせることになります。
そう言った意味で、ニコラスの活動は正しいんだと思います。
I absolutely agree with his statement. I think children have unlimited possibilities in the future. Yet, if no education and no suitable environment, the possibilities are lost. In this sense, Nicholas’ statement and activities are right things, I think.
“children have unlimited possibilities”は、”children have unlimited potential”の方がいいらしいです。

I think we can educate children effectively by using technologies. Using smart devices, children can access a lot of information and knowledges. By accessing a lot of information, they can understand many things. Then the way of education will change by technologies, I think.
