“‘If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?’ If the Answer is ‘no’ for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.”
What people might not know though is that Mark and his wife, Priscilla Chan, have promised to donate 99% of their Facebook shares over the course of their lives to their newly established philanthropic effort, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI), that focuses on improving education, advancing science, and championing equal opportunities for all.
According to CZI, access to engineering and technological resources are often very limited. Educators, scientists, and medical researchers are often hindered by software engineering and developer restraints.
As a solution, CZI aims to create an organization that allows their partners to access world-class engineering, technical support, grant-making, investing and advocacy resources to aid in the development of world-changing solutions and breakthroughs more efficiently and competently.
According to Zuckerberg and Chan, the most important lesson they have learned as both entrepreneurs and philanthropists is, “to focus on problems we have some unique ability to solve.”
With Mark’s engineering and technological expertise combined with Priscilla’s Harvard-educated medical and educational background, CZI certainly has the pedigree to make a tremendous impact on the world and its future generations.
I think Mark and Priscilla wanted to make the world which improve education and progress science and give equal opportunities to everyone. Farther more, I think they wanted to eliminate a lot of obstacles in some field especially in the engineering or science.
I think Mark and Priscilla used their experience of actually running a company and the knowledge they learned at university to create CZI. As mentioned in this article, they specifically utilized the lesson that “to focus on problems we have some unique ability to solve.”
What would you say you are most knowledgeable about?
あなたが最もよく知っていることは何だと思いますか?
僕が最もよく知っていることは、空港のオペレーションのことです。
僕は約25年間、空港で働いていて、どのように空港が運用されているかについてはよく知っています。
逆にそれしかないですけどね。
What I am most knowledgeable about is airport operations. I have worked for airport for 25 years, I know a lot of things about how airport is operated.
Do you think you could apply this knowledge in a similar fashion as Mark and Priscilla?
My knowledge and experience are a bit special, so I don’t know these things can apply for helping people or not. But the way of negotiate with stakeholder or the basic way of finding the solutions may utilize for the purpose.
How would you answer Mark Zuckerberg’s question in the quote at the beginning of this lesson?
I think what Mark Zuckerberg said in the quote is really important thing for us. People tend to do what they want to do rather than what they should do. But we have to do most important thing first of all. I think we have to remember these things everyday.
Hi Ko! Splendid work in today’s lesson, and I could see how eager you always are to have a discussion about any topic. I appreciate your input in class, and I hope you enjoyed your time today. Have a good day, see you soon!
