Xander Schauffele — who won the men’s golf competition Sunday at the Tokyo Games — is a player with close ties with Japan. His mother has Taiwan ethnicity and grew up in Japan, and his grandparents live in Shibuya Ward, Tokyo.
“It’s a true honor, I love Japan,” he said at the pre-tournament press conference. “I’ve always enjoyed the culture and the food.” At the PGA Tour’s Zozo Championship two years ago, he was impressed with the cheering that he felt was like a major tournament, he said.
Earlier this year, the world number five golfer was competing with Hideki Matsuyama for the win at the Masters. But his tee shot on the par-three 16th went into the water, dropping Schauffele out of contention.
