Karl Nepomuceno, better known to mobile gamers as KarlTyzy, is a sixteen-year-old e-sports athlete who has represented the Philippines in numerous international online gaming competitions.

He started playing as a professional gamer of the famous app Mobile Legends at 14. Surprisingly, at the age of 15, he bagged the gold medal in the 30th Southeast Asian Games. But before savoring victory, Karl’s dream almost didn’t come true.
His parents were in complete opposition to his passion as it took him away from his studies. Furthermore, his irregular sleeping pattern worried his parents a lot. His mother would either confiscate his phone or turn off the WiFi as a disciplinary measure.
However, Karl proved to them that his dreams are worth it. On January 23, 2021, Karl, along with his team, Bren Esports, bagged the $140,000 prize money as the World Champion of the Mobile Legends Tournament held in Singapore. Playing as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the team, Karl was awarded an additional $3,000.
Sometimes, people closest to us are unsupportive of our dreams. Maybe because they don’t see our vision the way that we do. What’s important, though, is that we are focused on our dreams. We have to take the leap as early as now before it7s game over.
Do you like playing online games? Does it motivate you? How?

I don’t play online games. But in the past, I often played video games. I was angered from my parents, because I became not to study like Karl. I don’t play games now, because if I started to play games, I can’t stop playing them.
Was there ever a hobby that conflicted with your studies before? How did you handle it?
今まで勉強と衝突した趣味はありましたか? どう対処しましたか？
ゲームのほかに、バスケットボールをやって勉強をしないことがありました。
学校の部活でバスケットボールをやっているときも、あまり勉強をしませんでした。
部活のバスケットボールを引退してから、勉強を頑張りました。
Besides playing games, I sometimes played basketball and didn’t study so much. When I played basketball in my school activities, I didn’t study so much. After I retired school activity basketball , I studied eagerly.
Have you experienced extreme disapproval from family in pursuing your desired dream? How did you conquer it?
夢を追う上で、家族に極度に反対されたことはありますか? どうやって征服したの？
僕の夢を追う上で、家族に反対されたことはありません。
僕の夢は家族の幸せと、子供の成長だったので、反対されるような夢ではなかったからだと思います。
僕は今までそのために自分の出来ることを精一杯やってきたつもりです。
I have never experienced disapproval from family in pursuing my dream. Because my dream was our family’s happiness and my son’s growing up, so my dream was not like disapproval from others, I think. I have been doing my best to do that.
When my high school entrance examination, I told by my junior high school teacher that I could not pass the entrance exam of high school which I wanted to go. However, because I had studied hard, I could pass the examination finally. My junior high school teacher was very surprised.
What hobby or career would you like to pursue before it’s finally game over?

もっと空港のオペレーションについて勉強したいです。
外国の空港などのオペレーションも勉強をしたい。
そして、最終的には最も効率的で快適な方法を見つけ出したいと思います。
I want to study more about airport operations. I also want to study airport operations of overseas. And I want to find out most efficient and comfortable way in the end.
